What is a personal domain name?
Previously, individuals were not allowed to register .my domain names with MYNIC . However, due to popular demand, that is now possible, and individuals can now register personal domain names. For more information on domain names in general, please refer to the FAQ – About Domain Names .
What does a .my personal domain name look like?
It ends with .name.my. So if your name is Azlin Hassan, you can register your personal domain name with MYNIC as azlinhassan.name.my . Your website URL would look something like this: http://www.azlinhassan.name.my .
In addition, you will get a personal e-mail address: azlinhassan@name.my with e-mail forwarding service. This service links your current existing e-mail account to your .name.my address and forwards any e-mail for the name.my address onwards to your existing e-mail account.
You must have your own e-mail account for the forwarding service to work.
How is a personal domain name different from other domain names?
Other Malaysian options such as .com.my and .net.my cater to registered organisations . Personal domain name registration is solely for individuals, and the domain names are for personal use only. Registered organisations cannot apply for personal domain names.
Are there any terms and conditions attached to registering a personal domain name with MYNIC?
All Registrants (i.e. the person under whom a domain name is registered) have to abide by MYNIC’s policies and procedures. Before submitting your domain name registration application, you must read MYNIC’s Agreement for Registration of Domain Names . By submitting your application, you are confirming that you have understood and accepted this agreement.
Can anyone register a personal domain name?
Registration is open to any individual aged 18 and above, holding a Malaysian National Registration Identity Card (NRIC).
How many personal domain names can I register?
Up to eight per NRIC.
Can I register domain names for my spouse and children?
Spouses must register separately if they are above 18 years of age. However, you can register on behalf of children aged below 18 years old. There is a section called ‘Subsidiary Information’ in the application form where you fill details of your child. However, it is important to note that you are completely responsible for any domain name registered under yourself, and you will be the only one with whom MYNIC will deal.
What happens when my minor turns 18?
Please refer to Can I Transfer a Domain Name? below.
What if I'm not Malaysian?
You must show proof of residing in Malaysia, have a valid passport, and are aged 18 and above.
What if I'm Malaysian but currently living abroad?
You can register an overseas address so long as you state your NRIC number and are aged 18 and above.
Choosing a Personal Domain Name
Can I register any name as part of my personal domain name?
All .my personal domain names end with .name.my. The personal domain name label to the left of the .name.my should reflect your name. However, nicknames are common. Because registration is on a ‘first come first served’ basis, domain names must not:
already have been registered to another applicant or
be the subject of an application currently under consideration by MYNIC.
Doing a search using the MYNIC Whois Service will reveal if your chosen domain name is available.
What are the personal domain name naming conventions?
Before applying for your domain name, please read MYNIC's
rules on personal domain names
for guidelines on choosing your personal domain name.
Does MYNIC check on my choice of domain name?
MYNIC is the sole arbiter of domain names choice violations. However, as far as third party rights are concerned, it is not MYNIC’s duty nor responsibility to screen requested domain names to determine whether the use of a domain name by a Registrant may infringe upon the right(s) of a third party.
By applying for the domain name, the applicant certifies that certifies that, to his or her knowledge, the use of this name does not violate Malaysian trademarks, intellectual property, or other laws, and that the domain name is not being registered for any activities not permitted under any law of Malaysia.
Any disputes between parties over the rights to use a particular name are to be settled between the contending parties using normal legal methods. MYNIC does not act as arbiter of disputes.
For trademark related domain name disputes, these are governed by MYNIC's Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (MYDRP). Please click here for the FAQ on MYDRP.
Registering A Personal Domain Name
Who handles personal domain name registrations?
MYNIC Resellers. These are partners officially appointed by MYNIC to handle personal domain name registration on behalf of MYNIC. They also handle the registration of .com.my, .net.my and .org.my domain names.
What do Resellers do?
Resellers will bring you through all the steps of registration, including collecting payments. They also offer non-MYNIC-related domain name services such as name hosting and data services. Sometimes, they bundle the registration service with their other products and/or services. Make sure all invoices and bills clearly state MYNIC charges, distinct from any charges the Reseller may impose for other services you purchase from them. MYNIC is not responsible for these other services.
Where can I find out more about Resellers?
For more information about Resellers, check out the FAQ . For a list of Resellers, click here .
What’s the registration procedure?
1. Read through this document and other relevant documents in the site.
Besides this FAQ on personal domain names, the documents below provide help for all levels of users and are a guide to the registration process.
This tells you all about the MYNIC Domain Name Registration Service (DNRS). There is an FAQ-cum-Glossary for those new to domains, an FAQ on MYNIC, and an FAQ on Resellers.
This is a crucial document. When you submit the Domain Name Registration Form to MYNIC, you are confirming that you have read, understood and accepted all the terms and conditions in this agreement.
What are the recent announcements about?
This is where you get the latest information and news on domains and the registration process. You are advised to update yourself before submitting your registration form.
What prerequisites are needed?
Proof of identity (a copy of your NRIC for Malaysian citizens / a copy of your passport for non-Malaysians);
A ‘live’ e-mail address (all communications from MYNIC will be via e-mail);
An e-mail forwarding address for your name.my e-mail address (this need not be the same 'live' e-mail address above)
A ‘live’ Internet link;
Your primary name server , and configured it for the domain name to be registered*;
Your secondary name server and configured it for the domain name to be registered*; and
Details of your Technical Contact (this person maintains your name servers and answers all queries regarding technical matters)*
*There are many hosting vendors (such as Resellers ) who provide these services. Please note that such services are completely separate from MYNIC’s domain name registration services.
Note that MYNIC stipulates the need for Administrative Contact, Billing Contact and Technical Contact. For details on job responsibilities , go to the MYNIC FAQ. However, in the case of personal domain name, the Registrant is the same as the Administrative Contact.
How do I make my registration application?
Remember, applications can be made only with Resellers. There are two ways you can register a personal domain name with a Reseller: as a walk-in customer, and online.
If you are a walk-in customer, here’s what to do:
Step 1: Select your Reseller from this list .
Step 2: Prepare all relevant supporting documents and bring them along to your Reseller. You might also want to check out the domain name registration form here , although your Reseller will fill it in for you and submit it on your behalf.
Step 3: When you make an application, your Reseller must:
check that your domain name conforms to MYNIC’s rules on personal domain names .
Please note that applying for a domain name does not guarantee registration;
confirm the validity of your supporting documents;
provide you with a copy of the Agreement for Registration of Domain Names .
This sets out the terms and conditions of registering a domain name with
MYNIC. Read through this carefully. This Agreement sits with
MYNIC;
inform you of the importance of security of domain names by safeguarding
your UserID and passwords. For more information on security,
click here
;
inform you of how much to pay to register your domain name and renew it
every year (this is set by MYNIC). You can also keep yourself updated
here.
inform you of the function and importance of correctly configuring your name servers.
Step 4: After verifying the information you have provided, the Reseller fills in the online application form with those details. You must check your details to make sure that all information provided is accurate.
Once the form has been submitted, it cannot be retracted or modified in any way until MYNIC approves or rejects the domain name registration. MYNIC reserves the right to revoke the domain name at any time without prior written notice to you, should MYNIC find any of the information supplied in the form to be incomplete, incorrect or inaccurate.
Please note that some information will be made publicly available through the MYNIC Whois Service .
Step 5: After you have checked through the form, the Reseller submits the form online to MYNIC for processing.
The application should be accepted by the system immediately. MYNIC
(domreg@mynic.net.my) will auto-acknowledge receipt of the application
by sending e-mail to you, your Technical Contact, Billing Contact and your
Reseller. Once you submit your application, that domain name is blocked.
However, please note that acceptance of the application in no way
guarantees registration of the domain name.
The application is rejected by the system. This could happen because it breaches Reseller Programme Policies and Procedures or is incomplete or there is a technical problem or a breach of MYNIC policies. Your Reseller will take the necessary action to rectify the problem.
Step 6: Once the application is accepted by the MYNIC system, please note the following:
Submission of the application means you have confirmed your application, verified all information in the application form and accepted the Agreement. However, submission of the application in no way guarantees registration of the domain name.
A notification e-mail will be sent by MYNIC once the domain name is registered.
If the domain name application does not follow MYNIC's processes and procedures, MYNIC will cancel the application. Cancellation e-mail will be sent to Contact Person(s).
If you are applying online yourself, here’s what to do:
Step 1: Select your Reseller from this list.
Step 2: Fill in your Reseller’s online registration form. Please
make sure that you fill in all information accurately. Any form filled
in incorrectly or inadequately could cause your application to be rejected,
and you will then have to submit a new application.
You are responsible for the accuracy of ALL the information you state in your application form. MYNIC reserves the right to revoke the domain name at any time without prior written notice to you should MYNIC find any of the information supplied in the form to be incomplete, incorrect or inaccurate.
Please take note that some information provided will be made publicly available through the MYNIC Whois Service.
Step 3: If all is in order, the application should be accepted by the system immediately. MYNIC (domreg@mynic.net.my) will auto-acknowledge receipt of the application by sending e-mail to all Contact Persons and your Reseller. Once you submit your application, that domain name is blocked. However, please note that acceptance of the application in no way guarantees registration of the domain name.
Please note that the application could be rejected by the system. Possible reasons are: a breach of Reseller Programme Policies and Procedures, or a breach of MYNIC policies, or the application is incomplete, or there is a technical problem. Your Reseller will take the necessary action to rectify the problem.
Step 4: Prepare all relevant supporting documents . These must be submitted to your Reseller via fax, post or courier.
Step 5: When your Reseller receives your application and supporting documents, your Reseller must, by the next working day.
check that your domain name conforms to MYNIC’s rules on personal domain names . Please note that applying for a domain name does not guarantee registration;
confirm the validity of your supporting documents;
provide you with a copy of the Agreement for Registration of Domain Names.
This sets out the terms and conditions of registering a domain name with MYNIC. Read through this carefully. This Agreement sits with MYNIC;

inform you of the function and importance of correctly configuring your name servers.
How do I know if my registration is done?
Domain name application forms are processed by MYNIC every working day of the week, and processing takes two working days. Domain names are registered on a 'first come, first served' basis.
If the registration is approved, MYNIC will e-mail your Contact Persons and your Reseller an approval notice, and activate your domain name immediately.
If your application is rejected, MYNIC will e-mail a rejection notice to your Contact Persons and Reseller. The notice will state a reason why it was rejected. If you want to apply again, you have to go through the whole registration process from the start. Check out the FAQ for the most common reasons applications are rejected.
Can I reserve a domain name?
Reservations are not allowed. Applications are processed when payment is received.
Once approved, is my domain name registered forever?
As long as you pay the annual renewal fee, and abide by MYNIC’s policies and procedures. However, MYNIC reserves the right to revoke the domain name at any time should MYNIC find any information supplied in your application to be incomplete, incorrect or inaccurate.
How much is registration?
Please check the Fees Schedule .
What does it entitle me to?
The fee entitles you to a personal domain name and one corresponding e-mail address (with e-mail forwarding service) for one year.
Do I have to pay renewal fees?
Yes, you have to renew your registration annually. Details are in the Fees Schedule .
Where will my invoices be sent?
Your Invoicing Party will inform you via e-mail when your domain name is up for renewal. For details on your Invoicing Party please use our Whois service.
Do I have to make separate payments for my .name.my e-mail address?
No, it comes as part of your personal domain name registration. Likewise, the e-mail forwarding service which forwards e-mail from this .name.my address to any e-mail address you specify.
Can I have a different UserID in my .name.my e-mail address than my domain name? For example, if my domain name is azlin-hassan.name.my, can my e-mail address be ahassan@name.my ?
No, the label to the left of .name.my automatically becomes your
UserID in your e-mail address. Therefore, in that example, your e-mail
address will automatically be azlin-hassan@name.my
. This is not to be confused with the
UserID and password
required to access domain name information
.
What’s the advantage of this e-mail forwarding service?
Because of the e-mail forwarding benefit that comes with the .name.my e-mail address, you can use this one as your one constant e-mail address. So should you decide to change ISPs, you need only make one change – your forwarding e-mail address to which you forward e-mail from this .name.my address. This saves you the hassle of having a new e-mail address, including reprinting business cards and letterhead, and having to inform all your family, friends, and contacts about a change in e-mail address.
Must I provide a forwarding e-mail address?
Yes, all e-mail from your .name.my e-mail address will be forwarded to this forwarding e-mail address.
Can I change my forwarding e-mail address anytime?
Yes, click here for details.
Making Modifications
